Ruth Smithyman currently serves as the Principal - Communities and Social Performance at Newmont Corporation since March 2023. Previously, Ruth held the position of Corporate Strategic Planner - Community Vision at Merri-bek City Council from 2020 to 2022 and acted as Global Manager - Community Engagement for the World Mosquito Program from 2017 to 2020. Ruth's extensive experience at Origin Energy spanned from 2009 to 2016, encompassing roles such as National Manager - Communities, Senior Manager - Community and Indigenous Affairs, and Senior Advisor - Sustainability. Earlier experience includes serving as Specialist - Communities and Social Performance at Rio Tinto and as a Social Researcher at Edith Cowan University and the University of Cape Town. Ruth earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Anthropology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Anthropology from the University of Cape Town, complemented by a Diploma in Business from the Australian Institute of Management and a completion of The Prince of Wales’s Business and Sustainability Programme at the University of Cambridge.
