Bas van Abel is a Dutch social entrepreneur, designer and technician with more than 20 years of experience in social innovation. van Abel is the founder and board member of Fairphone and is a co-founder of De Clique, both ventures pursuing sustainable and circular approaches to production. van Abel gives guest lectures in sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship at Nyenrode, ESADE and Cambridge, and serves on the supervisory board of HKU while being an Ashoka fellow. van Abel previously served on the boards of Signify Foundation (2017–2021) and Social Enterprise NL (2019–2022). van Abel earned an MA in Interaction Design (cum laude) from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, studied Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at Delft University of Technology (1999–2000), and completed Leadership for Social Change at Harvard Kennedy School (2019).
