Gerd Jakob served as the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the European Southern Observatory, where they specialized in cryogenics. Prior to this role, Gerd led the Instruments and Cryogenic Systems Group and worked as a Cryogenic System Engineer for major telescope projects. Earlier in their career, Gerd held positions at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and UC Berkeley, focusing on cryogenic systems and infrared detector technology.
